Rjukan, ancienne citée industrielle de l’arrière-pays norvégien, au creux d’une étroite vallée où la lumière s’absente au cours des mois les plus rudes. En 2013, un héliostat (dispositif permettant de suivre la course du soleil, afin d’orienter ses rayons vers un point fixe) est installé sur l’un des versants. La lumière accapare maintenant l’espace central. Solspeilet cherche à révéler, par une proposition d’arpentage, une réflexion sur ce qui fait paysage dans cette vallée. D’une photographie à l’autre, le travail nous confronte aux surfaces, où chaque vue est un marqueur à la marge, sans repère distinct au sein de cet espace. Les êtres quant à eux semblent disparaître, laissant le dispositif et la nature se confondre. En isolant volontairement de ce cheminement, ces miettes de paysage, celui-ci met en crise la notion d’orientation et nous plonge par ces traces entre la mémoire de l’ombre et l’action de la jeune lumière qui fait la singularité du lieu.

Rjukan, a former industrial town in the Norwegian hinterland, lies at the bottom of a narrow valley where sunlight disappears during the harshest months of the year. In 2013, a heliostat, a device designed to follow the sun’s path and direct its rays towards a fixed point, was installed on one of the slopes. Light now occupies the central space.

Solspeilet seeks to reveal, through an act of surveying, a reflection on what constitutes landscape in this valley. From one photograph to the next, the work confronts us with surfaces, each view acting as a marker at the margins, without any distinct reference point within this space. The human figures, meanwhile, seem to disappear, leaving the device and nature to merge.

By deliberately isolating these fragments of landscape from their surrounding context, the work unsettles the notion of orientation and, through these traces, immerses us between the memory of shadow and the action of the young light that gives the place its singularity.
